All of the years we spent waiting and wasting
The time away, staring at the wall
Trapped by my fears and held hostage by silence
I couldn’t say anything at all

All of the years’ worth of pent-up frustrations
That threatened to break us all apart
Counting the tears that it took for forgiveness
I wish that I’d realized from the start

Time has passed, and though bitterness lingers
I’ve found that I’m happy on my own
Thankful at last for some space in between us
‘Cause now I can see how much I’ve grown

Now in control, I am living my own life
And ready for a change long overdue
Breaking the mold just to pick up the pieces
I’ll use them to build myself anew

How I hate these scattered showers
But the sun still shines behind overcast skies
And the light that breaks ‘round the raincloud’s edge
Illuminates the path ahead
Letting me know that it was for the best

Now and again, I can feel myself slipping
To habits I thought I’d left behind
Things that I said in the heat of the moment
All play like a cassette tape on rewind

It’s taking a while, though my eyes are still drying
I’m trying to trust myself again
Learning to smile at the face in the mirror
I’m not the same as I was back then
